Briefing Format Note

A standards note on when a brief is appropriate and what sourcing should appear with it.

Illustrated briefing page with concise source-linked notes

Briefs are used for developments that can be stated directly, sourced clearly, and updated quickly.

A brief should:

  • identify the primary source,
  • explain why the development matters,
  • distinguish reporting from commentary or aggregation.

A brief is a format, not a substitute for original reporting.
